The Newcastle Hospitals Burns Service provides specialist burns care for adults and paediatrics in the whole of the North East and Cumbria. The Burns Service is based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, and has a children’s ward (Ward 11, New Victoria Wing) and an adult’s ward (Ward 37, Leazes Wing). We have a multidisciplinary team of experienced healthcare professionals including Surgeons, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Intensive Care Consultants, Microbiologists, and Clinical Psychologists. We also have access to other staff groups including Social Workers, Play Specialists, and Dietitians.

The Adult Burns Service has 8 beds consisting of four single rooms and two double rooms. The ward is situated next door to Intensive Care with beds for those people with more severe or complex injuries. It also has a designated burns theatre.

The Children’s Burns Service has 11 beds all of which are in single cubicles with space for parents to stay. The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is close by with beds for children with more severe or complex injuries.

After discharge, ongoing care is provided by the Specialist Burns Outreach Team, who can see people at home, in other hospitals, and in their regular clinics. Patients are also followed up by the medical team and psychology team after discharge as required.
