The Regional Adults’ Burns Centre and Regional Children’s Burns Unit are both based at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.
The Burns service serves a population of approximately 3.5 million people across West Yorkshire, North and East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. The service is accessed by 19 Emergency Departments in an area of around 3,000 square miles.
The Unit manages approximately 150-200 patients every year, often with major and life-threatening burns and 1,800 outpatients (including outreach services).
All rooms are spacious and light. They are all single rooms with ensuite facilities
There’s also a dedicated therapy room for burns patients as well as a separate reception and waiting area.
The Centre has specialist patient hoist systems as well as new weigh beds (important to weigh patients for recovery and rehabilitation purposes).
As well as five adult beds for burns patients, the Centre has two ICU beds.
Children and adolescents 0 – 18 years of age are cared for in the purpose built Children’s Regional Burns Unit where there are five in-patient beds adjacent to a designated out-patient area.
Both services are committed to providing a holistic approach to burns care. Our multidisciplinary team of experienced healthcare professionals includes surgeons, intensive care consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists and an outreach nurse. We also have access to speech and language services, dietetics, specialists in assistive technology, and prosthetics services.
In many cases the same professionals work across both the Paediatric and Adult Burns Services, which helps young people with the process of transition. Wherever possible we try to provide continuity in the team of professionals caring for you.
